I started rollerskating at the start of 2021 having finally bagged some skates during the world skate shortage stemming from the global pandemic.
I can't believe it took me so long to realise I should get some wheels: I was an ice-skater as a kid (the twirly, figure-skating kind), and toured the world from 16 to 20 in a bunch of Burlesquish Cabaret Revue Ice Shows.
I'd thought about inlines as they'd be closer to blades, but was somewhat captivated by the hot chicks in the Insta videos the world became obsessed with in 2020. And the backlash to the whitewashing of its African-American historical significance.
It's my happy place. My body can't get enough as it's the only thing that comes close to the sensation of ice skating - my somatic practice for such a long time. But it's not something I get to do enough at the moment. Maybe when the kids are in school I'll make friends with my grind blocks.
